European Mobility Week 2011. What a week!

European Mobility Week celebrated its tenth birthday this year and Larnaka Municipality celebrated ten years of non-stop partiipation in the events! A week of actions and celebrations for all! With a radio live-link spreading the news at the beginning of the Mobility Week, several events followed taking place all over Larnaka! Thousands of people accepted our invitation to leave the car at the garage and take the bike or walk to the events! The festivities reached their peak on Saturday, 17th of September, with 350 people cycling around Larnaka's finest spots, covering a distance of more than 6 km! This year we were pleased to see that also people from other cities participated in Larnaka's Mobility Week events! Treasure hunts, interactive activities, in and out-school activities with children etc were only some of the other events organised for September 2011. During each and every event, several bikes and other gifts were drawn within the participants!

Children from American Academy
stopped the traffic for a few minutes
to remind drivers, that streets are for people!

But this year's Mobility Week was not only about celebrating but also about adopting permanent measures in order to promote alternative mobility such as purchasing a small fleet of bikes for the routes of the municipality employees, installation of "inspired" - according to the Commissioner for the Environment of Cyprus- bicycle parking stations, introduction of bicycle parking places as a Building Regulation within the limits of the municipality, etc.
